Guide

How to run a family weekly review.

A family weekly review is one sitting, once a week, where one person decides everything the household has captured: what happens this week, what waits, who does it, and what to let go. Done well it takes about twenty minutes, and it replaces a week of reminding. Here’s how to run one, with or without Helg.

1. Pick a day that’s yours

Not necessarily Sunday. Pick the day you actually have half an hour — after the last shift, before the school week starts — and keep it.

2. Capture all week, decide nothing

During the week, anyone in the family writes things down the moment they come up, into one place. The rule is that capturing isn’t committing: writing it down doesn’t mean it happens this week.

3. Decide each thing once

Go through what was captured, one at a time, and give each a single answer:

  • This week (or a specific day).
  • Later — not now, not forgotten.
  • Someone else’s.
  • Let it go.

4. Fit the week to its hours

Add up roughly how long this week’s things take, and compare it with the hours the week really has after work, sleep and the kids — usually far fewer than it feels. If it’s over, move things to later now, not on Thursday night.

5. Look ahead for long lead times

Anything with a far-off deadline — a passport, a visa, a renewal — gets a start-by date, so it begins while there’s still time.

Doing it in Helg

Helg is built around this review: the family captures into an Inbox, the weekly pass walks you through each item with those four answers, This week shows the hours budget, and start-by dates sit next to due dates. Helg is free for one person. For a household it’s US$14 a month for 4 people including you, plus US$3.50 a month for each extra person, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed.

Questions

How long should a family weekly review take?

About twenty minutes once it’s a habit. The first one takes longer because everything is in it.

Who should run the weekly review?

One person decides, so nothing is decided twice; everyone else feeds it during the week. Rotate who decides if that suits your household.

What day is best for a weekly review?

The day you reliably have half an hour. For shift workers that’s often the day after a run of shifts, not Sunday.
