By·updated

Mail forwarding before the move, then the government records in the right order, then everyone else. Ontario wants your driver's licence and vehicle permit updated within six days.

The steps

  1. Step 1: Order Canada Post mail forwarding before you move

Choose 4 or 12 months. It starts five days after you buy it online (three at a post office), and needs government photo ID.

    15 min
  2. Step 2: Update your driver's licence, health card and vehicle permit

Within six days of moving, in one go with a ServiceOntario account. Not before you've moved. The new licence is mailed free in four to six weeks.

    15 min
  3. Step 3: Update your address with the CRA

In your CRA account it changes immediately. The CRA doesn't pass it on to other departments, so the rest is up to you.

    5 min
  4. Step 4: Tell your bank, employer and insurers

Car and home insurance both depend on where you live, so call them rather than just updating online.

    30 min
  5. Step 5: Move or cancel the utilities and internet

Book the internet install early: install dates can be the slowest thing to get.

    30 min
  6. Step 6: Update everything else

Phone carrier, subscriptions, school, doctor and dentist, pharmacy, and saved addresses in shopping apps.
